If you haven’t seen the utterly charming The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a new scripted series from Amy Sherman Palladino (of Gilmore Girls fame) on Amazon, please stop everything you’re doing and start watching it immediately. I’m serious. This post will be here waiting to help you create your dream closet as soon as you’ve binged all eight episodes and you emerge from the sassy, snappy fantasy.
I could write several posts about Midge Maisel’s wardrobe (and in fact, I just might). The entire aesthetic of her 1950s New York experience makes me swoon, including her ridiculous beauty routine after her husband falls asleep and her lingerie-clad drunk meltdowns. But it’s her outerwear that is the most captivating, a seemingly endless supply of statement coats and jackets that practically punctuates every episode.
According to The Cut, costume designer Donna Zakowska based the pink cocoon coat from the first episode on pieces from the pages of mid-century French Vogue. Her other outfit toppers are always an eye-catching color, in a luxe fabric, and often have interesting sleeves, sometimes elbow or 3/4 in length. In true tv fantasy, she always seems to have the right coat for every occasion and somehow makes running around the city look completely effortless.
As we pull ourselves out of the doldrums of winter and push puffy coats to the back of our closets, embrace Midge Maisel as the perfect plus size spring outerwear inspiration.
ELOQUII Flare Sleeve Jacquard Coat
Although we didn’t see Midge in many, if any, prints, I feel like she would totally approve of this option from ELOQUII, especially because of the flared elbow-length sleeves and the punchy green in the floral print. Perhaps as the show moves through seasons and into the 1960s, we’ll see her embrace more prints.
ELOQUII Flare Sleeve Jacquard Coat – $76.99 (on sale)
Junarose Fluted Sleeve Jacket
Perfectly pretty in pink, can’t you just imagine yourself throwing your hand into the air to hail a cab or hurriedly writing joke ideas into a notebook as the sleeve sways with every flourish? It’s one of my personal rules that if you can imagine an entire story wearing a specific piece of clothing, you must buy it.
Junarose Fluted Sleeve Jacket – $151
Elvi Tulip Statement Shearling Coat
Even though the silhouette of this shearling coat by Elvi isn’t quite in Midge’s wheelhouse, the fabric and color make it a possibility worth considering. Nicolette Mason wore it on Valentine’s Day if you need any further evidence that it’s incredible.
Elvi Tulip Statement Shearling Coat – $99.36
ELOQUII Drama Sleeve Coat
This is the purest of options on this list and frankly, my favorite. ELOQUII also had this in a lovely green and confident red, but there’s something about this yellow that still speaks to me. Besides, we could all use a little more sunshine in our lives.
